  16. BACKGROUND:

  19. This program, first released in 1990, has been updated quar-
  20. terly each calendar quarter since then.  It was written, and
  21. is researched and updated on a weekly basis by Michael D.
  22. Jenkins, CPA and attorney, with a new version released each
  23. calendar quarter.  In addition to providing constantly up-
  24. dated tax, business, and legal information for small busi-
  25. nesses, the program itself is under almost constant revision
  26. and expansion, to make it ever-easier to use and more useful
  27. to you, the small business owner or adviser.

  29. Mr. Jenkins, a graduate of the Harvard Law School, former-
  30. ly was a tax attorney with a large San Francisco law firm
  31. noted for its expertise in venture capital matters.
  32.  
  33. Mr. Jenkins is also a Certified Public Accountant, and
  34. practiced for over 4 years as a tax CPA with two of the
  35. "Big Six" international accounting firms, in Los Angeles
  36. and Honolulu, as well as being a manager and later a tax
  37. partner for several years with a large local CPA firm in
  38. the San Francisco area.  He also spent several years prac-
  39. ticing as an economics and business consultant in L.A. and
  40. Washington, D.C., with the consulting firm and private
  41. "think tank," Economics Research Associates.  At present,
  42. he authors a series of business "how-to" books and runs a
  43. small software company, Ronin Software, which publishes this
  44. program and another shareware program, the financial take-
  45. over game/simulation, "Wall $treet Raider."

  47. This program has received very favorable reviews in PC WORLD
  48. Magazine in a 1993 cover article that selected it as one of
  49. only 24 "instant payback" software programs, that would more
  50. than pay for themselves almost immediately.  It was again
  51. chosen and reviewed very favorably in a 1994 PC WORLD cover
  52. article that selected Small Business Advisor as one of "the
  53. best of business shareware" programs.  More recently, it
  54. received rave reviews ("...superb all-in-one information
  55. source...") in a full-page article in the March, 1995 issue
  56. of The COMPUTER SHOPPER.

  62. Mr. Jenkins is the principal author of the book "STARTING
  63. AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN @STATE."

  65. He is also author or coauthor of 50 other similarly-titled
  66. books, one for each of the states (plus the District of
  67. Columbia), all of which are published by Oasis Press (a di-
  68. vision of PSI Research, of Grants Pass, Oregon -- a leading
  69. publisher of business books and software).

  71. Most of these 275-to-300-page how-to manuals are partially
  72. coauthored by local experts in the respective states (the
  73. local offices of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, in
  74. some 30 states), and together have sold nearly a million
  75. copies nationwide since the initial book in the series,
  76. "STARTING AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA" (now in
  77. its 14th annual edition) first appeared in 1981.

  79. We were honored that this book series was chosen in 1994
  80. by INC. MAGAZINE as one of the 6 "winners," out of all the
  81. hundreds of small business books INC. reviewed, in a cover
  82. article entitled, "IN SEARCH OF THE SMALL BUSINESS BIBLE."
  83. A subsequent review in the NATIONAL PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT (Sept.
  84. 1994 issue) said that the Starting & Operating a Business
  85. series of books is:  "...probably THE MOST USEFUL small
  86. business self-help book available on the market...."

  88. The National Small Business Journal, based in Atlanta,
  89. noted recently that our Georgia book edition was the number
  90. 1 selling small business book in Atlanta, in a monthly
  91. listing provided by the Barnes & Noble bookstore chain.
